You can’t control how you feel.
But you can always choose how you act.

Mel Robbins, The 5 Second Rule.

If you're afraid to move beyond your first ownable idea because you think it'll confuse your audience, you're missing a powerful opportunity: proving you're not a one-trick pony.

Mel Robbins went from a lawyer who struggled to get out of bed to a bestselling author, an award-winning podcast host, and a public speaker with more than 40 million followers.

AFTER

#1 New York Times bestselling author

How'd she do it?

By refusing to let one viral idea define her.

Mel’s original claim to fame was the 5 Second Rule. (It consists of counting backward 5-4-3-2-1 and forcing yourself to physically move before your brain talks you out of action.) This framework became part of a TEDx talk with 33+ million views and a book that’s sold millions of copies.

While many thought leaders cling to their first ownable idea well beyond its expiration date, Mel used her newfound authority to establish her second ownable idea: the Let Them Theory. (This framework consists of forcing yourself to let other people act, feel, and think the way they’re going to. That way you free yourself from the mental prison of trying to control things you can’t control.) The result? Another bestselling book.

Different idea. Different framework. Same audience lapped it up.

THE PSYCHOLOGY

We’re more likely to listen to and accept new ideas when they come from someone we already see as credible and successful.

Behavioral scientists call this the Messenger Effect.

01/ Step 1: Recognize the limitations of your first ownable idea

The 5 Second Rule solved one specific problem: taking immediate action. But as years went on, Mel noticed she was hitting a different wall: trying to control other people. Your second ownable idea should serve as a needed solution to a new problem instead of a refinement of the first one.

02/ Step 2: Test your new idea in public before going all-in

Mel shared the Let Them Theory on TikTok where it racked up 15 million views within 24 hours. Your audience will show you whether they'll follow you to new territory before you write 6 months’ worth of social posts.

03/ Step 3: Make it clear you’re evolving, not abandoning

Mel didn't say "forget the 5 Second Rule." She positioned the Let Them Theory as "here's the next problem I solved for myself, and it can help you, too." When you frame new ideas as evolution rather than sharp pivots, your audience sees growth instead of instability.

THE RESULT

Mel's audience doesn't see her as someone stuck repeating herself. They see her as someone who keeps solving real problems—and they trust her enough to follow wherever she goes next.

YOUR MOVE THIS WEEK

Identify a main problem your audience faces that's separate from what your current ownable idea encapsulates. Write a single post addressing it to see if your audience wants to hear more.

Until next time,

With ❤️ from Katelyn
